WORTH TRYING
👋 Good morning.
We asked Claude to edit video, not talk about it. We ranked 80 tools across 16 video-editing categories, then ran 11 of them hands-on inside Claude this month, on free plans and trials. Claude can run the edit. The free plan just won't let you post it.
IN 3 MINUTES, GET 1% BETTER THAN EVERYONE YOU KNOW:
Claude ran the whole edit in three tools.
Free plans hand you drafts, not deliverables.
Every export came out at the wrong volume.
A rough-cut tool, plus a free hand-off to Resolve.
The best pick for every video job.
3 Did you see
1. 🤖 Claude drove the edit, no app needed
Claude can now connect to video apps and operate them for you, no clicking required. We wanted to see how far that goes. Descript, OpusClip and HeyGen each went from upload to downloaded file inside Claude. HeyGen turned our 76-second English clip into Spanish in about 5 minutes at 1080x1920, logo included on the free output. OpusClip, on a trial, cut a 5-minute reel compilation into 11 vertical clips in about three and a half minutes. Four of them started in one reel and ended in another, so they cut at the wrong spots. The reason: Claude never watched the video itself. It worked from transcripts, still frames and reports from each tool, so it can’t catch a bad cut the way your eyes would.
Do this: Start with a clip where the transcript is the edit, like a talking head, then listen to every join before you trust it.
The new editor works fast. It just edits blind.
Would you let Claude cut your next video?
2. 💧 Free plans hand you drafts
Connecting these apps to Claude is free. Getting a file you can actually post mostly isn’t. Descript rendered at 406x720 (vertical video is normally 1080x1920) with a watermark. HeyGen capped avatars at 720p with logos tiled across the frame, and OpusClip’s trial exports carried its logo. Tools that edit your own footage need a paid plan: on Free, Runway refused all seven of its footage and music tools, and Higgsfield had 0 credits left after its trial. Canva’s connector rejected video files outright and turned video briefs into still images with no motion or sound.
Do this: Judge the downloaded export, not the preview, and check which jobs your plan allows before you build a workflow on a connector.
Free to connect. Paid to publish.
3. 🔊 Nothing came out at the right volume
Every platform plays audio at a standard loudness, about -14 on the LUFS scale, and almost no export hit it. Exports ranged from -30.2 (very quiet) to -14.5, and some were loud enough to distort. Descript’s Studio Sound left our clean clip at -25.8, and OpusClip’s HD exports came out quieter than the source. A free audio tool, run by Claude on our own machine, brought one clip to -14.1.
Do this: Plan your own -14 LUFS pass after the final export, and measure loudness and true peak before anything goes live.
The edit is automatic. The volume knob is still yours.
2 Things you didn't know you can do with AI
1. ✂️ Turn a talking-head take into a rough cut · Descript · free plan · Claude connector
Descript's Claude connector ran the upload, transcription, an agent edit, captions and an MP4 render. We named the fillers and a retake; the agent cut them all, plus 6 words we wanted to keep. The catch: the free render was 406x720 with a large watermark.
2. 🎞️ Hand the cut to a real editor, free · DaVinci Resolve · Free edition · timeline file
DaVinci Resolve's Python scripting and MCP need paid Studio, but the free one opens a timeline file. Claude's script turned our transcript into FCPXML in under 0.1 seconds. Resolve 21.1 Free rendered 11 cuts frame-exact. The catch: one human click to import, and only our own FCPXML was tested.
1 Worth trying
1. 🧭 The AI video tool guide · free · Google Sheets
This sheet matches 80 tools to the job you need done, and marks the ones we tested ourselves. All 80 picks across 16 categories. Best pick per job:
Transcripts and rough cuts: Descript.
Hand-off to a finishing editor: DaVinci Resolve Free, via Claude's timeline file.
Long video to clip drafts: OpusClip, on a trial. HeyGen's clipper kept whole reels.
Video as code: HyperFrames, local render at 1080x1920, no watermark.
Spanish versions: HeyGen. Free adds a logo, and the dub ran 10% shorter.
Music: Epidemic Sound fitted a track to 76.000 seconds. Downloads needed a subscription.
Thumbnails and covers: Canva. Not for video.
Avatars and generated video: HeyGen and Seedance 2.5, paid plans only.
The catch: every result is one October 2026 run on our own clips, on free plans and trials. Paid plans weren't tested.
Finally, a free export with no watermark.
